I find that most people want to be something or someone. We say things like, “who do you want to be like when you grow up?” or “what is it you want to do?” We want to shape people by what they accomplish or by others who have accomplished great things.
I don’t believe it is a bad thing to look up to people or say you want to be like so and so. There are some pretty amazing people in the world. The trouble comes when we want to become someone else because we don’t think we’re good enough as is.
Why can’t we get it in our heads and hearts that we were made with great purpose and intension. We are not cosmic mistakes. But so many of us treat ourselves that way as we seek to become something other.
Today, instead of seeking to be like Martin Luther King, Ghandi, the cute girl or the guy who gets the girl, why not simply be you. Discover who you are and become that. Instead of studying the lives of others, take a day to discover you, study you and dream about you. What imprint do you want to leave on the world? What kind of hero do you want to be? Then take the bold step of being yourself and doing the work that follows.
